Vietnam's IPv6 adoption rate has risen to 67.68%, ranking second in ASEAN and seventh globally. According to data released at the 2021-2025 government IPv6 project review meeting held on Thursday in Ho Chi Minh City, India currently ranks among the world's leading countries in IPv6 transition, surpassing many large economies, with 95 million broadband users actively using IPv6 services.
Vietnam, after early adoption of international best practices, has become a model for other countries over the past 5 years due to its exemplary nationwide deployment experience.
The transition to IPv6 has become inevitable. IPv6 and IPv6+ are now seen as key to the future of the internet and new digital service delivery, as well as the foundation for digital infrastructure, e-government, and national digital transformation. Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long stated that the internet is entering a new phase where IPv6 is no longer just a technical feature but a core foundation for national digital infrastructure, digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cloud computing, and next-generation digital services. He believes that promoting IPv6 and transitioning to IPv6-only networks is a long-term strategic task closely tied to building a modern, autonomous, secure, and sustainable national digital backbone.
The core goal for the 2026-2030 period is to raise IPv6 adoption across the national internet ecosystem to 90% to 100%, gradually phase out IPv4, and keep Vietnam among the top 10 to 20 countries globally in IPv6 transition.
IPv6 addresses were first introduced by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) in 2004, which was then under the Ministry of Information and Communications (now under the Ministry of Science and Technology).
